There is actually a solid background on why a grindstone is a good translation.
When you grind good laptimes on the track. There is actually a Finnish saying/idiom also, used by the F1 and other motorsport commentators, to “Tahkota kierroksia” (grind laps) or to “Tahkota kierrosaikoja” (grind laptimes).
