Simucube 1 Ioni blowout

G’day all,

Had a pretty spectacular blow up of the Ioni Pro HC last week on my Large Mige SC1. Initially on power on I recall a quiet pop followed by what sounded like something power down, but there was some background noise at the time and I could have misheard so I continued. But there was no FFB in sim, so I cycled power and was met with sparks, flames and spitting solder. I was very surprised.

Postmortem found a crater in the Ioni where a cap once was (C5?) and a short to ground of one of the motor phases (phase 2). Visually all else looks ok so far but I haven’t removed the Simucube board to check the back side yet. After reading through the troubleshooting wiki I also checked the regenerative circuit of the Simucube board (1r004) and found the MOSFET reading low (~5.9 kOhm). Though this was measured with the Ioni removed and I wasn’t aware of any faults up until this point. Everything was great.

Hopefully there is some advice out there on what to check next to determine the extent of the damage and whether it even is feasible to replace the driver. If there is anyone with NOS of the Ioni or a Simucube for wrecking I’m interested, but of course I don’t want to throw parts at it without understanding the underlying cause.

Also thank you to all involved in the development of the original OSW/SC, it’s a pretty cool thing we have and its amazing what it has become now.

Cheers,

Ben

I am concerned about the Simucube board, though. If you remove the IONI from it, then it should still be visible on the PC via the X3 USB port as a game controller.

Thanks for the quick reply Mika, and that’s great news regarding the driver.

Can confirm that it is visible as a game controller and appears ok when powered on with the Ioni removed. Positive first step?

Yeah, that’s positive. It would imply that the IONI and possibly the regenerative resistor MOSFET and the resistor itself are the casualties.
