SC3 + AMS2 FFB (Missing Details)

So, I’ve been using the SC3 Pro for nearly 2 weeks now, testing in various titles.

I very much like the Tuner interface and appreciate the new features, especially the Surface detail boost and Telemetry effects (where applicable).

One strange issue I’m having though (AMS2), using the Default or Default+ FFB in game is that the mid-range surface details worked as expected initially but then faded away after a few adjustments were made to settings in Tuner software.

I thought it could be an issue with the game due to recent Beta updates and reported in the AMS2 forums however, no one else reported similar issues. I then tested back-to-back the AMS2 Beta release and the Public release and found the same result in both titles.

I then found that I could get those missing details back when I boosted the Surface Bumps to about 50% and used the equalizer feature to fine tune them by reducing the higher frequencies and raising the mid-range ones.

So, my question is, is this a known issue or something that needs to be investigated further?
If so, let me know how I can help.

Hi,

it would be vital for us to know certain car and track combination that is a good reference in this title. And if you still get the details in e.g. one of the provided profiles but not in some other profile (with the settings of that other profile also posted).

Hi Mika, thank you for your response!

The primary FFB (preset profile) is the Default+, it’s also the one that Reiza uses to develop and tune ffb effects in AMS2. It’s the one that provides more surface details (varies by FX ffb slider).

Originally, I used the SC2 Pro as the wheel preset and applied the SC3 Pro axis on that control preset. Since having these issues, I created a new control set using the Generic Direct Drive / Custom control preset. The results were the same.

Regarding the cars / tracks, I’ve tested with numerous different combinations, and the results were quite consistent. When testing such things, I generally start with one of the Formula Vee’s or the Formula Trainer. I’ve also tested with the GT2 / GT4 and few others.

SC3 Pro settings / Simucube Tuner v3.0.3
Base Torque: 12Nm
FFB Feel: 75% / Direct
Mechanical Feel - all zero for testing purposes
No additional WB effects applied initially, as I wanted to focus only on game ffb effects (Default+).

In-Game FFB settings (AMS2)
FFB Gain: 50%
Low Force Boost: 0%
FX: 50%
Damping: 50% (recommended starting point by Dev’s)

Note: these settings are similar to those I used for SC2 Pro. Initial SC3 Pro surface detail felt normal however, after some experimentation with Tuner settings, I noticed a lack of mid-range ffb effects (Surface bumps / tire scrub).

Image: These are the settings I applied to achieve a similar feel to what I had using SC2 Pro and what I first encountered with SC3 Pro (before mid-range was reduced).

I hope this information proves useful.

Thank you!
Dean

Dean, you updated from SC1, correct?
Was wondering if anyone moved from SC2 to SC3 to share the experience.

I had SC1 and then SC2 Pro.

If you watch the SC3 video on OverTake and others, they suggest the improvement in FFB quality over SC2 is roughly 10%. At only face value, that might be a fair estimate but, that doesn’t tell the whole story by any means.

Personally speaking, I really like the FFB shaping and Road Texture Boost + the EQ; these have been very effective in adding details in titles that have little to no surface effects in the game FFB. Being able to adjust FFB strength on the fly is really useful, especially when titles don’t offer per-car gain settings.

AMS2: Normally, the Default+ ffb provides plenty of details but, adding a bit of Cornering Effect reminds me of rFactor2 ffb. I also like to add a little Shift Bump effect. Right out of the box, SC3 impressed with finer details that I’d never felt with SC1 or SC2. The tire scrub and brake locking effects immediately stood out in a very good way (high frequency but silky smooth at the same time).

AC Evo: Out of the box, Evo’s ffb can be pretty dull. Since Kunos added the Road Effects slider, it’s better however, the AC titles have always been prone to producing very grainy feeling surface effects. With the FFB EQ in SC Tuner, it’s easy to remove the high frequency details while boosting the softer mid-range ones, or even the suspension effects.

AC Rally: I’m really loving this title but, being able to dial in the road details in the FFB (even on Tarmac) has improved my enjoyment a lot! The game FFB is often cited as a weak point currently but, SC3 has solved that. I also added some Cornering effect which really improves lateral forces on Gravel as well.

BeamNG: Similar experience to AC Rally in terms of adding surface details. Again, it’s easy to shape those details for the firmness or softness desired. This is one of those titles where I like the premise of the game, crash physics, Rally, offroad, etc., but I have not played it much, largely due to the FFB.

I’ve also done testing in AC / ACC / PMR / LMU and others, all with good results. Another effect I sometimes add is the Engine Vibes - usually only felt around idle but, I was surprised how well SC3 deals with very high frequency vibrations (Like F1 frequencies).

The overall Tuner layout and features are very nicely done, imo. The feature switches and additional drop-down tuning menus for filters and parameter settings are great to have. These provided quite a few Easter Egg moments for me.

Telemetry effects may currently be limited in some titles, so I haven’t yet taken a deep dive into those.

It looks like you’ve messed up your FFB with the equalizer!

Did you also adjust the FFB on your SC2 with the equalizer to change it? If so, try using the old SC2 settings on your SC3 for testing. If you didn’t, just leave the equalizer settings off and see if you like it better.

Congratulations to your SC3 Pro!

Thanks for the reply, @Purple_Red

Messed up settings with EQ?
How so? Is that a known issue?
Should I reinstall Tuner and test without touching EQ to solve it?

I did not use the new Tuner version with SC2 at all nor have I used any pre-existing profiles from SC2 with SC Tuner + SC3 Pro.

I’ve not seen anything similar when using the EQ settings in titles other than AMS2, so far.
