Randoms losses of FFB

I got a Simucube 2 sport on Saturday and I have had nothing but issues since I got it. I am having losses of ffb while racing that are relatively random. I have hands off detection off as well as clipping notification off so get rid of any beeps I can. While driving I will get a series of beeps. Sometimes just one beep, sometimes 2, sometimes 3. With these beeps I usually get a temporary loss of ffb. It can disappear for just an instant with just 1 beep for i can go away for several seconds usually with 2 or 3 beeps. I have even on a few occasions had it completely reset. Once even locking up True drive and I had to reboot both TD and the Simucube to get it working again.

I have mad sure all cables are plugged in appropriately. I have tried multiple combinations of USB ports. I don’t usually get any info in the debug when this happens but it was different this time. There are 2 changes in the verbosity that appear in the log just before I sit down to start driving. Everything after that happened during qualifying/a race.

Hi,

We are investigating this. Does the wheel continue to track in-game, or does it freeze as well?

If the wheel continues to track in-game, this can be caused by e-stop being activated via any reason. You likely have high torque mode enabled, and releasing e-stop will cause the motor to give the audible tone. Is the tone you are hearing similar this tone?

Can you check the wiring to the e-stop button and check that the wire does not cross any potential interference sources such as motion platform motor wires etc.?

It usually continues to track but I have I think twice had it completely turn off. I will check the e-Stop tonight to make sure it is fine. I don’t run motion so no concerns there. The beeps I hear are like when you first turn on the motor. Not the usb activation windows makes but the beeps the motor makes. It just does not always give 3 beeps sometimes just 1 or 2 where when I release the e-stop it is 3 every time.

If you have possibility to check if True Drive momentarily shows E-stop PRESSED when you loose the FFB, that would in finding out what the issue is. Our first diagnosis is the e-stop button or an internal fault within the unit that is somehow related to that.

I race in VR so not the easiest thing to do but I will do a session tonight while screen capping to see if that is the issue. Is it possible to run the motor without the e-stop connected to eliminate it as a variable. Like a diagnostic test, If it is not present and the crashing stops sort of thing.

Unfortunately the estop signal also electrical keeps alive the motor current driver transistors, so driving the motor without it is not possible.

Not sure if it is helpful or not but I did get a fault location 480901 last night with a complete loss of ffb. It was the 1 and only time I have received this fault. I researched it and saw that it might be due to turning the wheel on before TD. I have since been booting TD first and have not received that error since but do still get the losses of ffb.

Are the pc and the Simucube power supply connected to a grounded mains outlet? Is there a UPS in there? The 480901 fault that used to be common, was related to too fast baudrate change in a bad moment inside the device. But that was fixed, and if it happens in any firmware novadays, it is most likely some type of interference issue. But the e-stop can also be an interference issue, so lets try to rule out issues first.

I believe the socket is grounded but I can check that was well. My power strip that has a light on it that say ground I assume if that is on then I’m good? I don’t have a UPS as of now but I have considered that. Any problems with that as I was considering it weather it is the cause of this issue or not?

So I got a 2 prong tester and the outlets are grounded. I also rerouted my e-stop as it was running near the power cord for the simucube. The disconnects/loss of power that had beeps associated with them have stopped. But man is that cord sensitive. If i have ANY other cord near it (USB, Rift cords, Headset) it will have issues. I also still get the occasional loss of ffb that has no beep associated with it. Although the base does squeak when this happens. This is much much less frequent. I drove for 2-3 hours last night in testing and had 2 moments were this happened. These only lasted for a second or less each time. I will continue to test this weekend.

Well I get home today fire the sim up in the same config that worked last night. Had 3 losses of ffb with
SMBus baudrate initialized successfully : 4500000
appearing each time in the log and a series of beeps with each.

I then had a complete loss of ffb along with Over current Power stage forced off fault location 442001. This happened with ffb set to 50% while driving a lap on corner entry.

All my other tests have been in iracing. Today I tried Assetto corsa and had a complete system rest. I had to re-enable torque as if it was the first time after to get it working again. here is the log

We will have a new firmware version on Monday or Tuesday that has a possible fix for this issue.

I had another complete shutdown with a fault location 0. Completely shut off the wheel base for almost a minute. No steering no ffb, just died and locked 90 degrees left. Nothing I could do fixed the issue it just corrected itself after about 1 minute.

I want to believe you about the fix in firmware over the next 1-2 days but I am getting a lot of different errors. Are you sure this is not a defective unit? This is concerning for someone just receiving a brand new unit.

We do have a suspicion, that the power draw limiter in the servo drive firmware in releases 2021.1 and up is not reactive enough at the moment. We improved the servo drive algorithms but it seems that it had unforeseen consequences in some units. This issue can cause microcontroller restarts, supply voltage issues and outright device reboots. Its been under investigation and we got some confirmation last week that this is indeed the case and that the proposed fix should fix it.

Does 2020.10 have that “power draw limiter”?

As a test would rolling back drivers to before 2021.1 work? To see if it is indeed software or hardware.

Every firmware has it. It is controlled by the peak power limit parameter in IONI on Simucube 1 systems.
