If print is too small for some to see
R1: 48V x 12A
R2: 48V x 9.5A
Phiphong single PSU rating: 48V x 6.25A
Funny and also sad to notice there is “error” in the R1 input current rating, during normal operation, the device cannot draw that much current, but that was just simplified detail to match the 2 power supplies. Somehow I feel that, in the past we were perhaps smarter to overlook these details so that we do not have to build faq about these details.
R1 is soon completely out from new sales, so if someone prefers to get that (and do not trust what we say) the clock is really ticking now as getting that version as new is soon impossible as we have not produced the version for some time now.
I like that very much.
As far as I can tell, it doesn’t matter what they’re both rated for, if the software isn’t drawing that much amperage from the PSU’s then it won’t make a difference.
If GD is programming the firmware so that the SC2 R1 and R2 draw the same current (after efficiency loss), then I seriously doubt the experience will be different between the two.
It seems like the differences are purely aesthetic and logistical (literally a different layout on the back panel and having one PSU instead of two).
Keep it simple… offer this as an upgrade for previous AND make more money ! everybody i$ happy
No news on this ? no single PSU upgrade possible ?
I also wonder if they are the same size ? can anybody provide a photo side by side of each pwer supply, the double version and the single version ?
thanks
The power supplies are of different size. No single PSU upgrade is possible. We never managed to satisfactorily make the reliability analysis on whether or not the power draw going through a single load balancing resistor inside the device would work reliably in the long run.
Judging by posts on this board there are more problems reported with new PSU vs dual Mean Well.
Consider yourself lucky and enjoy what you have.
And get this mount, it helps with managing dual brick.
Then again, when one looks at the number of units sold, the number of support cases with the new PSU, while slightly larger in number, is similar in percentage of units.
Bought a SC2 Pro in January. One 450W power supply. Located in Melbourne Australia if that makes a difference
I want to add, that this is when one takes into account the mismatched units on Pro R1 wheel bases.
One “new” news about the PSU situation, is that we are switching manufacturers of the Pro power supply.
- Some people might find the new manufacturer a pleasant surprise.
- The new PSU has been tested in similar ways as the previous Pro R2 power supply was.
- No torque or servo drive tuning changes had to be made anywhere.
- The new unit is of different size to previous Simucube 2 Pro R2 PSU.
- The switch was made due to reasons other than reliability. (pricing, availability etc.)
So you are moving away from Phihong?
Back to Mean Well or somebody else?
Would Mean Well be a good surprise to you?
GD and Beano were always pitching it as the best of the best, thus earlier move to Phihong was quite unexpected to be honest.
while I can’t reveal the manufacturer directly, we have always liked Mean Well very much.
They just didn’t have a suitable power supply in their catalog back when R2 was put to production.
This raises the obvious question: if there’s a power supply vendor you’d prefer going forward, and we’d prefer to have whatever you (the designers) think is preferable, will those of us with existing R2 units be able to order future-spec PSUs?
On one hand, it’s probably a small difference. On the other hand, the number of obsessives who are willing to go to the effort and expense is probably pretty limited, so perhaps it’s something that could be accommodated?
its not meant to be a difference at all from product quality perspective, and the warranty periods etc. will be the same.
So the specs label will be updated, showing the true max power?
We have done a similar analysis of the unit as we did for the original Pro R2 unit.
Also, there has been some PCB changes on Simucube 2 itself to support some alternative components. We still very much live in a world where there is a huge chip shortage.
Due to these changes, we have re-done the CE certification and EMC tests again, for the whole unit, including the PSU.
